community-focused
organisation. Impact of Lahore Islamic Centre’s support
1. Keeping a school branch operational.
One of LIC’s most important contributions was taking responsibility for the rent of the premises for a Doors of Awareness branch. This is significant because it addressed a basic but essential cost: maintaining a physical place where children could receive an education. Rather than simply making occasional charitable donations, LIC was helping provide the infrastructure necessary for the school to continue functioning.
2. Supporting children who faced barriers to education.
The branch served children from low-income and disadvantaged backgrounds, including children of workers and domestic staff and families living in jhuggis or informal settlements. Doors of Awareness has continued to be described publicly as a network serving underprivileged children across Lahore. By supporting a branch financially, LIC therefore helped make education more accessible to children whose families might otherwise struggle to afford schooling and its associated costs.
3. Extending support beyond the classroom.
LIC’s contribution was not limited to education. During Ramadan, it provided ration packages and essential food supplies to families connected with the school. At Eid, children received new suits/clothing, gifts and other items. This matters because poverty affects a child’s education through the wider circumstances of the household. Supporting food security and children’s welfare alongside schooling created a more holistic form of assistance.
4. Giving children dignity and social inclusion.
The Eid distributions had a social as well as material value. Providing new clothes and gifts allowed children from financially disadvantaged households to participate in celebrations in much the same way as other children. Likewise, Ramadan ration support reduced some of the immediate pressure on their families. The aim was therefore not simply to keep children enrolled in a school, but to support their wellbeing, dignity and sense of belonging.
5. Creating a platform for longer-term educational opportunity.
The broader significance becomes clearer from the subsequent history of Doors of Awareness. Its schools have continued to attract educational and community-service initiatives, including teaching programmes, arts and crafts activities, nutrition initiatives and later computer-literacy support. This illustrates the value of sustaining community schools: once the basic institution exists and remains operational, other organisations and volunteers can build additional educational opportunities around it.
